Who Is Motl Muscle?

Benjamin Motl

I've been doing this exercise thing for 18 years, and competing in strength sport for 12 years. I was thirteen years old when I first started weight training and knew absolutely nothing about it or about fitness entirely for that matter. From the years of thirteen to eighteen I put countless hours into exercise training, mostly the focus was on what could be called power building (or a form of it), derived from the many bodybuilding books written from the 80s that my father had collected.
When I got to college at nineteen, the focus shifted from the power building routine I had developed and began to become more intentional as I delved into Powerlifting. I competed in my first powerlifting meet in 2012 and went all in on powerlifting until I was introduced to strongman in 2015 at which point i would compete in both. I competed throughout the school year and graduated in 2016 with my bachelors in exercise science. At this point I went to work as a personal trainer and sports performance coach before returning to graduate school to work on my masters degree in exercise physiology all while still competing in both the sport of powerlifting and strongman.
Upon receiving my masters degree, I went back to work as a strength coach while also still competing in both powerlifting and strongman, finishing my last powerlifting meet in 2021 with a total of 1747lbs, Squat of 608lbs, Bench Press of 372lbs and Deadlift of 761lbs approximately. After this competition I began to delve more deeply into strongman competitions which has been my primary focus ever since. From the competitors perspective, I've done roughly 20 powerlifting contests and 23 (give or take a few) strongman contests and have been competing in strongman for 10 years and powerlifting for 9.
So in summary, I've been getting after it for awhile, and along the way I've learned a lot and gained a lot of valuable experience in terms of what does and doesn't work as far as training and fitness is concerned. In addition to training, I've also gained a lot of experience and knowledge in dealing with injuries and preventing them, as I've had my fair share of them in the past from the intensities I've mistakenly put on my body.
My intention in all of this is to put this knowledge and experience gained to work, and to serve others by empowering them with the knowledge needed to bring their performance and fitness to a place that improves their quality of life.
